Charlie Watts and the Tentet
Ronnie
Scott’s Club, London - April 9
2004
When we arrived at the club we
were surprised by the waiting line of people who could’t get a reservation.
Charlie’s 12 performances are of course sold out for weeks, since the maximum
capacity of this very nice and intimate venue is 300.
We were given a great table on the right side of the stage and were happy to meet some people we’re used to see during the Stones’ tours.
Charlie arrived one hour before the show and signed a few autographs.
A few minutes before show
start, we saw Marianne Faithfull who sat down a few tables behind us. She was
looking great and seemed to have a good time.
Bill Wyman was seen on Monday, and Ronnie Wood is said to come on Easter Monday.
Charlie’s band came up on
stage around 11:00 PM.
The performance included You Can’t Always Get What
You Want which is by far the night’s best Stones song performed by
the band, Epistrophy, I
Fall In Love Too Easily and Tin Tin Deo,
sung by percussionist Luis Jardim.
Marianne went to see Charlie backstage before leaving. About 40 people left after the 1st set, allowing some of the fans waiting outside to get in for the 2nd set.
Charlie was back short before
1:00 AM.
This time, the band played Duke Ellington’s Sunset
And The Mockingbird, Start Me Up (very
hard to recognize at hre very beginning), Licks,
‘Faction (a jazz version of Satisfaction),
Elvin Suite (from the Charlie Watts &
Jim Keltner project) and Duke Ellington’s Take the
“A” Train among others.
Before leaving, Charlie signed a couple of autographs.
We all left the venue with great memories and a promotional single CD of
‘Faction announcing his forthcoming jazz CD recorded in June 2001 at the
Ronnie Scott’s Club to be released in June.
