PRINCE
Le Bataclan, Paris
October 28th 2002
Right after the Zenith show, we went queuing for the Bataclan. We finally got in without the "help" of scalpers around 2:00 AM, and the show started approx. 20 minutes later. Unfortunately, the stupid security guys took all the tickets away while letting you in, so I got absolutely no souvenir to show on this page. This kind of club shows are a great opportunity for Prince to communicate with his fans, and for his musicians to be given the opportunity to show their individual skills. The songs are all mixed up in sophisticated medleys, and sometimes the arrangements make them unrecognisable, unless you really know the lyrics. That's why writing about a Prince aftershow is something really difficult. The 1st part of the show was really rocking. Prince is really an amazing guitar player. To be noted : a short cover of Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love. After a few mofre songs, including Shake, Prince went into a more funky part in which he played bass, including songs like Hair and Brickhouse . After that, Prince sat down on the keyboards, and played a long and rough Techno jam, supported by excellent drum playing from John Blackwell and from Candy Dulfer, Maceo Parker and Greg Boyer. Then again, it was time again for Prince to take the guitar for a couple of songs including Alphabet St., and a new version of NPG In The MF House with new lyrics : NPG In This Funky House. The show went on, Prince still switching from Keyboards to guitar and on and on. All The Critics Love U In Paris, Dolphin, Come On and Party Til The Sun Comes Up are played. The last song will be Housequake. Prince was asking "Paris, what time is it?" and we all sang "Its Time To Get Funky". No matter how loud we were singing, this was the last song of this memorable show (or night). We came out at 5:00 AM after a 2nd 21/2 hour show that was very different from the 1st one, with all kind of souvenirs and musical experiences in our heads. Counting the 1 hour long private soundcheck, and both concerts, Prince played a total of 6 hours of music on one night in Paris, from 5:00 PM to 5:00 AM ! As everybody noticed on this website, I'm not a Prince addict, but I appreciate his music and his creativity. Apart of the music, he's also the only artist I know who's able to play 2 complete shows on one night. The next time he plays in your neighborhood, don't miss him !
