"Bye Bye Germany !"

Once again : a great Metallica show : 2 hrs 15 min of pure Metal !!!

We went into the stadium just seconds before Slipknot started. Their set was intense, and they had a really great response from the audience, especially the youngest ones on the pitch. The sound was somewhat muddy, but it’s always difficult to have a great mix with so many instruments playing together. The drummer and the 2 percussionnists did a good job.

The show that followed was my 1st open air show with Metallica as headliner.
I have to say that I was kinda disapointed by the stage design. The set was just a plain stage with the amplifiers and Lars’ drum kit, which is much less spectacular than the stages they used to have on their previous arena tours. The screens (1 on each side of the stage) were a little bit small considering the stadiums the band is playing this summer, and I had a thought for the guys sitting in the very back of the venue. To be honest, adding the size of both screens would have given the size of the screen used by the Rolling stones for their arena shows, but the cameramen were real professionals, and the angles they showed were pretty original.

The sound was great, such as the show.
The weather forecasts were pessimistic, but we were lucky. No rain at all despite the predictions, but a good temperature for an open air show, and the strong wind who’s been blowing over Paris all day long was finally gone.

The band was in excellent shape and in a very good mood.
Blackened is definitely a great opener, and compared to their Bercy show 6 months ago, the setlist gave the fans a lot of changes.
I particurarily appreciated
I Disappear and Wherever I May Roam.

The S&M concept was represented by a very powerful rendition of No Leaf Clover which opened the first encore. Master of puppets was just as great as usual with all the audience singing along.

The 2nd encore was a real treat, thre band starting by a rare interpretation of Dyer’s Eve, ending up with the always appreciated Seek and Destroy.

I was a little bit disapointed to see how the Load/Reload era was almost skipped from the setlist.
Fuel was awesone as usual, but having seen that they played King Nothing in Amsterdam, I was hoping for it in Paris too.

Robert is really a great showman, and compared to their shows in the 90ies, the band really make a lot of improvement communicating with their fans.
At the end of the 1st encore, Lars, the band’s only european, took the microphone and announced the results of the day’s big soccer game : "
Czech Republic 2, Germany 1. Bye Bye Germany ! ».
Germany was out of the European Soccer Championship.

At the end of the show, the band spent several minutes giving to their front row fans everything they could : dozens of guitar picks and a lot of drum sticks.
Before leaving, James, Rob and Kirk all said a few words in french for the audience biggest pleasure. Lars, as provocative as ever came last and said « 5 shows in Paris in one year…. Fuck you !!!!!! » before announcing that they would be back soon.

The sooner the better, guys and please, next time, consider playing King Nothing and Ain’t my bitch !
